Obama has said his administration will not rest until those involved in the failed attempt to blow up an airliner over the United States on Christmas Day are brought to justice.
He's also announced an inquiry into how the Nigerian man who's charged with trying to blow up the plane, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had been able to board it in Amsterdam.
This was a serious reminder of the dangers that we face and the nature of those who threaten our homeland.
Had the suspect succeeded in bringing down that plane, it could have killed nearly 300 passengers and crew, innocent civilians preparing to celebrate the holidays with their families and friends.
The American people should be assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep you and your family safe and secure.
The authorities at Schipol airport in Amsterdam which Mr Abdulmutallab passed through on his way to Detroit say they intend to introduce more sensitive scanners to check passengers.
An official said these scanners capable of detecting the type of explosive that Mr Abdulmutallab is alleged to have been carrying would be introduced within a year.
